A Brief History of NOLTY: From 1949 to Today

NOLTY traces its roots back to 1949, when Iwao Ono, then a director of the Japan Management Association, helped develop the Noritsu Techo—the first Japanese planner to feature hourly time markings.
Drawing on his experience as a manufacturing executive and productivity consultant, Ono believed that the way people used their time was fundamental to improving productivity. Having already used planners to encourage better time management in the workplace, he introduced the idea of hourly markings to help people plan their days more effectively.
From a single planner to a philosophy
Initially produced for members and corporate users, the Noritsu Techo was launched for businesses in 1951 and made available to the general public in 1958.
Over the following decades, it continued to evolve alongside changing ways of working. Dedicated planner paper was developed, useful reference materials were added, and layouts were regularly refined around the needs of the people using them.
Behind these developments was a consistent philosophy: a planner should not simply record appointments, but help people use their time well and enrich both their work and everyday lives.
The NOLTY brand is born
In 2013, JMA Management Center Inc. refreshed the long-established Noritsu Techo brand under a new name: NOLTY.
The change reflected the expanding role of planners beyond traditional business use and a desire to explore the broader possibilities of writing, planning and designing one’s time.
NOLTY today
More than 75 years after the first Noritsu Techo was created, NOLTY continues to carry forward its traditions of thoughtful design, carefully developed paper and skilled Japanese bookbinding.
NOLTY UK represents a new chapter in that story, bringing this philosophy and Japanese craftsmanship to notebook and diary users across the UK.
